Beef is Australia’s most available red meat protein in dog food, and one of the most nutritionally complete. High-quality beef provides all essential amino acids, significant iron, zinc, and B vitamins, and excellent palatability. Like chicken, beef is a common allergen because of widespread exposure — but it remains an excellent primary protein for dogs without sensitivity.
Key consideration: Fat content in beef varies enormously. Beef mince from supermarkets can be 20%+ fat; lean beef cuts are 5–10%; beef meal in dog food has moisture removed and concentrated protein. Dogs with pancreatitis, obesity, or hyperlipidaemia should have fat content monitored carefully in beef-based foods.

FAQ
Is beef or chicken better for dogs?
Both are excellent protein sources with different profiles. Chicken is leaner; beef is higher in iron and zinc. Both provide complete amino acid profiles. For dogs without allergies, either or both is appropriate. Novel protein consideration: if your dog has been on chicken-based food their whole life, beef is a good rotation.
Can dogs eat raw beef?
Yes — raw beef is generally safer than raw pork or raw salmon. Standard food safety hygiene (handle as you would human-grade raw meat) applies. Raw beef poses some bacterial risk (E. coli, Salmonella) — not for immunocompromised households without strict protocols.
