Cornish Rex cats are extraordinary creatures, defined by a spontaneous genetic mutation that produces a distinctive soft, wavy or curly coat utterly unlike any other cat breed. The rexed coat, resulting from a recessive gene variant, is fine, dense, and delightfully soft, with minimal guard hairs and virtually no shedding. For people with mild to moderate cat allergies, Cornish Rex may be tolerable, as they produce less dander and allergens than other breeds, though they are not entirely hypoallergenic.
Cornish Rex are exceptionally active, playful, and acrobatic cats that seem to defy gravity with their athletic movements. They are extroverts—vocal, engaging, and deeply affectionate, forming intense bonds with their families. They thrive on interaction, play, and being the centre of attention. These are not lap cats in the traditional sense; they prefer being actively involved in household activities, often ‘helping’ with whatever their humans are doing.
Their curly coats lack the insulation of normal cat fur, making them sensitive to temperature extremes. They are strictly indoor cats and struggle in cold or damp environments. Regular bathing (monthly) helps maintain coat health; brushing can damage the delicate curls. Cornish Rex suit active, engaged families able to provide constant interaction and environmental enrichment. They are unsuitable for elderly owners or those expecting an independent, low-maintenance companion.
