Common Questions
Do dogs need life jackets?
Dogs that can swim confidently in calm water don’t need a life jacket for supervised pool swimming. Life jackets are recommended for: offshore boating, rough water or strong currents, elderly or arthritic dogs, brachycephalic breeds (poor swimmers), dogs new to swimming, and any time the dog is in water without easy exit access.
Can all dogs swim?
No. Many breeds are poor natural swimmers. Brachycephalic breeds (Bulldogs, Pugs, French Bulldogs) have dense, front-heavy bodies that make floating difficult. Dachshunds’ long bodies and short legs create balance issues. Greyhounds have very little body fat and tire quickly in water. These breeds in particular should always wear a PFD near open water.
How do I wash a dog life jacket?
Hand wash with mild detergent in cool water. Rinse thoroughly. Hang to air dry – never machine dry, as heat can degrade foam flotation panels and reduce effectiveness. Inspect foam panels after each season for compression or waterlogging. Replace if foam no longer springs back when compressed.
Are dog life jackets legal requirements on boats in Australia?
Dog life jackets are not currently a legal requirement for dogs on boats in Australian waters. However, Marine Safety NSW, Maritime Safety Queensland and similar bodies recommend PFDs for dogs on vessels. Some marine parks and state forests require dogs to wear PFDs on specific waterways – check local regulations.
The EzyDog DFD is the best dog life jacket for Australian conditions – the bright visibility, solid handle for lifting, and Australian brand support make it the top choice for boating and ocean swimming. For recreational beach and pool swimming, the Outward Hound Granby Splash provides excellent value. Whatever you choose, test it in controlled water before heading to open water.
